Dietitian Danielle Ziegelstein

Danielle’s Bio

Danielle is a Registered and Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist. She has always been interested in food and nutrition: how food can impact health, how it can bring people together, how it can be used for celebration and pleasure; but also how it can conversely be a source of distress. A people-person who loves connecting to people and making them feel comfortable and understood, Danielle took her passion for healthy living along with her to Johns Hopkins University, where she graduated with a degree in Public Health, and later received her Master’s degree in Clinical Nutrition from NYU. She went on to receive clinical training at Johns Hopkins Hospital during her Dietetic Internship. Coming from a public health background, Danielle thinks one must examine all of the factors which affect food choices and health outcomes. Food is only one piece of the puzzle, but an important one that can have meaningful impacts on overall wellbeing. Danielle strives to get to know you as a whole person so that she may understand how best to improve your health and quality of life.

Danielle is passionate about fighting “diet culture” and dispelling the health misinformation which seems to be rampant these days. She aims to provide individualized, evidence-based care that is realistic and sustainable for clients. She loves the science of nutrition, but is also fascinated by psychology and mental health, and recognizes that for many, there are strong emotional associations with food. She acknowledges that there is no “one size fits all” since we all have different needs, preferences, and lifestyles. She is excited to work with clients to help them improve their relationship with food and is enthusiastic about making clients feel empowered rather than restricted.

Health is both overcomplicated and oversimplified at the same time. With so much confusing and conflicting information out there, it’s no wonder so many people are left frustrated and overwhelmed. Danielle wants to work with you to answer questions, clarify any confusion, and reassure you that making impactful changes is probably simpler than you expect. She is looking forward to finding realistic, sustainable, personalized and effective habits for you—and having some fun while doing it. She will focus not only on healthful eating patterns, but on broader lifestyle changes such as exercise and mediation, which contribute to globally better health and happiness.

In Danielle’s free time, she loves to spend time with friends, whether that’s going on walks, trying a new restaurant, or going on a weekend trip to the beach. She is also a registered yoga teacher and really enjoys doing a yoga or Pilates class. She wakes up every morning looking forward to her coffee. Her favorite foods include Mediterranean food and sushi, and she’s on a mission to find the best dairy-free ice cream in the city.

Services

Danielle will offer individualized and holistic nutrition counseling in a way that best fits your lifestyle and health conditions. With options for in-person or virtual sessions, we will arrange for what is most convenient and productive for you. This might be a traditional office visit, a session conducted while walking in Central Park, or even one that takes place in your home to do meal prep/meal planning. This service is flexible and designed to address multiple components of health. Our health is impacted by so many factors: food choices, activity levels, sleep, stress levels, genetics, and social relationships. Food choices and stress can both affect our gut microbiome, which then has larger impacts on inflammation levels and overall health, including cardiovascular risk. Similarly, our eating habits (both positive and negative) are typically complex and multi-factorial. Impaired relationships with food and our bodies do not discriminate by gender or age—food issues may be prevalent among men and women of all ages. With my specialty in food psychology, disordered eating, and gastrointestinal/digestive disorders, I will provide a non-judgmental and shame-free space to help you explore the root of some of these health behaviors. We will work on lifestyle changes—such as stress management, or taking a more balanced and less obsessive approach with food—informed by your priorities and specific health conditions and treatment regimen. I will also collaborate with Dr. Meyer on your care and utilize a team approach to make sure what we are addressing is in line with your medical treatment and goals.
